Out Of Focus

Deeply Moved by the current developments in the media and the political corridors, I couldnt stop myself from posting even though I am in the thick of my exams.

What started off as a very optimistic month, with India winning in the World Cup after 28 years and the massive public support to Anna Hazare's anti-corruption campaign seems to have lost course. All the politicos would be extremely happy as the focus has now shifted from anti-graft to face saving for civil society members of the JanLokpal Panel. The corrupt forces, showing extraordinary solidarity, took out a pseudo-maligning campaign and assisted by an irresponsible media have succeeded at creating doubt. By impugning the members of the civil society in the drafting committe against corruption, they have generalized it. The media, instead of understanding that the aim of such smear campaigns is only to weaken the fight against corruption, has played into the hands into such forces. Cynics continue to roar at top of their voices, none of who have a better solution. Just sticking to "law of the land" wouldn't do in changing times. The timing of IPL has assisted to divert the attention as well.

Unneccesary and irresponsible comments from all 3 sides of the society viz. politcos, media and the intellectuals, who are responsible for fighting corruption, have weakened this movement considerably. Digvijay Singh continues to spit out venom as an ongoing move to appease his masters. Also, the entire clangor over Narendra Modi was irrequited. I mean what's the point of mentioning someone, when he is nowhere related to the issue in hand (It just doesnt matter what Anna said). As far as the opposition is considered, BJP is playing safe by not issuing any comments at all. People are now used to the silence from 7 Race Course and 24 Akbar Road. Whether they say something or not, a miasma of feebleness emits from them.

Hopes of people which had lit up during Anna Hazare's campaign are fading, and there better be done something about it. Or else it would be very hard to save the country from the abyss of doom and despair.

Little Things Mean a Lot

Now, I just dont know from where did the thought of posting this came, but yet I am doing it!! Its a song by Kitty Kallen with the same name as this post. Please dont bombard me with - "Have you fallen in love ?" or "How did u suddenly post this?" and all funny questions (which, frankly, even I cant answer). Just some inspiration came from nowhere.( and I always respect my intuitions)
Here it goes-

Blow me a kiss from across the room

Say I look nice when I'm not

Touch my hair as you pass my chair

Little things mean a lot

Give me your arm as we cross the street

Call me at six on the dot

A line a day when you're far away

Little things mean a lot

Don't have to buy me diamonds and pearls

Champagne, sables or such

I never cared much for diamonds and pearls

'cause honestly, honey, they just cost money

Give me your hand when I've lost the way

Give me a shoulder to cry on

Whether the day is bright or gray

Give me your heart to rely on

Send me the warmth of a secret smile

To show me you haven't forgot

For always and ever, now and forever

Little things mean a lot

Give me your hand when I've lost the way

Give me your shoulder to cry on

Whether the day is bright or gray

Give my your heart to rely on

Send me the warmth of a secret smile

To show me you haven't forgot

That always and ever, now and forever

Little things mean a lot

A Generation Awakens

Well, I had predicted this to happen(Read my previous posts). But at such pace, no. Anna Hazare, a social activist who hails from Maharashtra has begun a fast-until-death for the Jan Lokpal bill @ Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He was supported and backed by well known activists such as Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Swami Agnivesh to name a few. What the activists demand is a simple drafting commitee with equal participation from executive as well as the civil society. The Government already neck deep in corruption and scams can't bring itself to accept could be the final nail in the UPA-II.

But what has taken (not just the govt.) but the entire nation by surprise is the humongous public support that has come forward for the 72-year old veteran Gandhian. And more hearty to see is the extensive pariticipation of the Indian Youth. They are the same people who, a few says ago, were celebrating India WC win. They have been criticised harshly for their callousness and their lack of patriotism. But what's showing up at Jantar-Mantar is a fitting answer to all critics. Youths, from all walks of life, may they be college students, businessmen, even Software engineers & school students have turned up in swarms to demand for the civil participation in the drafting of the Jan-Lokpal bill. For those who call us (the youth) impatient, a final word, You dont call someone who waits for 42 years as impatient. It might be perhaps premature to term it as an Indian Tahrir but the signs are definitely ominous. If all Indians and especially the 45 crore strong youth of india storms the streets, the government will have a hard time staying in power, leave alone a simple legislature.

Go India Go!

So Finally, after withstanding one and a half months of grueling cricket, and about a week or two of excessive media hype, Dhoni & Co. have done what Kapil Dev & his pack did 28 years ago. They Have won the World Cup.

It was a really emotional sight to watch all the tough guys - Yuvraj, Harbhajan, Sachin and even Mr. cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni getting emotional and letting those tears run through! Its a sight that every Indian(and the players, of course) would cherish for his rest of their lives. The courage and determination shown by the Indian captain, not only in the last match but rest of the tournament too is admirable. And whats special about this cup is that it was a team effort and not a one man show like it usually is.

Well, I was just adding a drop to the ocean to all that already has been written and said. But whats the catch. Where do we go from here? Before answering this question I would just ask you to think about the headlines splashing the newspapers a couple of months ago. They were full of scams- The CWG, the 2G spectrum, the WikiLeaks and what not. But amidst all this turmoil and difficult times, we have got something to smile. Something we can cheer about. It is something regarding which we can hold our head high and say WE are the champions! :)

This is a refreshing change brought on by the youth of a country who has rich demographic dividends just about to break water. What is required is to carry the momentum generated with this win forward. And they way cricket is treated in India, its not a wishful thinking that the Feel Good effect may just rub off to other fields and not just sports. I am eagerly looking forward to a new India, the onset of which has been heralded by the Men in Blue.
Go India Go!

In The Company Of Silence

A leaf out of my Diary.. dated September 17 2010..

"Its 5 a.m in the morning & I just can't seem to get any sleep. So instead of rising as rooster and stirring up the entire household, I quietly sneak up to my table and begin to write.

It is said that the best thoughts come out when there's peace - Inner peace. With the world running at a breakneck pace, there's hardly any time to pause & remember who you really are.

But Thankfully I am in much chaste surroundings. I close my eyes for a moment and try to listen. Apart from the crickets, there's something else that's a symphony to my ears, those ears who had more than there share of blaring cacophony, 'Silence'.

Its beyond description guys! The epitome of God's Creation can be observed just before the breaking of dawn. Its like the herald, proclaiming to the world about what is to come. Its just that this herald doesn't make any noise. To the contrary, it is totally devoid of it, as if prodding us to fall in love - with nature, our breath and our soul before we lose ourselves in the rat race of this world, period."

ARE WE LISTENING?

Random Stuff!!

Life is very exciting and the boring at the same time..Ya I know it sounds strange but I have been associated with that 'strange' tag for quite a while now and I am getting used to it..

This week started off firing. Read "7 Habits of highly effective people". And vowed to change my life & all.. Something which I have done umpteen times.
Khair, it wasn't even that bad. Yes I did improve the time management thing somewhat but I am yet to find a way to how to make use of that time (read How to study).. :P :P
Fir, kal to match tha, so no chance at all of studies!! :P :P
It was a belter of a match.. Was glued to the seat with my cousin and watched each & every ball of it..It was whole Lotta fun.
Just posted it to remind all you people that I haven't forgotten how to blog..
Infact a few of my seniors' blog (especially Ruchi & Prachi Mam) inspired me even more.
So, I am searching for some new interesting topics to post..

Indvidualism V/s Collectivism

Popularized by the writer Ayn Rand, Individualism is the moral stance, philosophy or the ideology that stresses on the moral worth of an individual. Groupism or collectivism, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of Individualism. Collectivism is any philosophical, political or social outlook that emphasizes the interdependence of every human in some collective group and the priority of group goals over individual goal.
As History & experience show us groupism is always encouraged in societies all over, especially India. We are always taught to live harmoniously and collectively with people, starting with the family itself. Sacrificing one's own choices, likes & desires for the 'Greater Good' is always looked up to, expected & promoted. Many A times groupism works in favor of oppressed who are downtrodden throughout their lives. Trade Unions are the best example of this. What can't be achieved by a single worker is successfully achieved by a collective effort.

But what groupism also promotes is hiding one's inability and incompetence in a group. The meaning is obvious. But what appalls further is, that many a times, it also hides a person's individual talent. Based on personal observations I always find that like minded people coalesce together to form groups but more often that not it happens that the overall productivity or ability of the group tends to be lower than the summation of the individual efforts. The people tend to curb their natural flair so as to match the common group mentality or level. Thus, instead of benefiting & complementing from each one's skill, the output of the group becomes a dismal mediocre one...

On the other hand, Individualism is literally tabooed upon in the east. This is in stark contrast to the capitalist west where there is almost an egomaniacal mentality of individualistic ambitions, which again is an undesirable extreme.
The society and the "Collectivism Activists" tend to initially ignore, then refute and then almost try to oppose, challenge & finish off an individualist(or at least his dogma) An individualist (barring the extreme ones) believes in his own strengths, beliefs & exudes a lot of self-confidence. Though sometimes it degenerates to overconfidence which is undesirable since it can lead to complacency. He doesn't consider a group is abominable, instead he is simply self-sufficient to fulfill his/her needs or requirements. An individualistic person doesnt consider himself the king of the world and neither does he think that the world exists solely for him as falsely spread by the neo-collectivists. Instead his relationship with the world is more of a symbiotic one; i.e fulfilling the needs required in a way such that it is mutually conducive. It means that the individualist believes that the world functions the way it does because it has to and both the producers and consumers are equally necessary for the world to function in a synergistic way. This individualistic mentality is personified by the character Howard Roark in Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead". Despite being a hardcore individualist, Roark never refuses to help anyone, including his adversaries. Thus, he cant be termed as selfish or egotistical by any stretch of imagination.

Perhaps this sense of independence and self-confidence is what the protagonists of Groupism can't digest. The fear of not able to accept their shortcomings & weak will to stand up openly for their cause is the reason why certain (full of such people and collectively mediocre) groups always target individualism.
Of course this is the case where the individualist is not, in reality, an egotistic jerk who just tries to justify a false sense of self appraisal and vanity.

It may seem a direct antithesis to the age old adage- "Man is a social animal". But this is not so. There is a need to look deeper & not in a cursory way, because the struggle between Collectivism and Individualism is the real battle based on the true essence of human nature, It is a battle of will.
